What is the Swiss Motorway Vignette?

The Swiss motorway vignette (Autobahnvignette) is a mandatory annual pass for driving on Switzerland's motorway network. Since 1985, all vehicles under 3.5 tonnes must display a valid vignette. The fine for driving without one is CHF 200 - plus you must still buy the vignette on the spot.

The 2026 vignette costs CHF 40 (approximately £39) and is valid from 1 December 2025 to 31 January 2027 - 14 months.

Why the e-vignette?

Since August 2023, Switzerland offers a digital e-vignette linked to your number plate. No sticker. No windscreen clutter. Your plate is registered in the Swiss federal database and checked automatically at borders and by police.

We register the e-vignette for you - it's faster and simpler than a posted sticker, and it means no waiting for delivery before your trip. It is valid the moment it is registered.

Questions

FAQ

Do I need a Swiss vignette to drive through Switzerland?

Yes, if you use any motorway or national road. Switzerland has no toll booths - the CHF 40 annual vignette covers all motorways. Even brief motorway use (missing an exit, for example) requires a valid vignette. The fine is CHF 200.

How much does the Swiss vignette cost?

Through Swiss Vignette the total cost is £44.99. This includes the official Swiss government fee of approximately £39 (CHF 40) and our English-language service fee.

What is an e-vignette?

The e-vignette is linked to your number plate in the Swiss federal database - no physical sticker needed. Your plate is checked automatically at borders and by police. It is valid the moment it is registered, so there is nothing to wait for in the post.

When does the 2026 Swiss vignette expire?

The 2026 vignette is valid from 1 December 2025 to 31 January 2027 - 14 months of coverage.

Do I need a vignette for my trailer or caravan?

Yes - trailers and caravans require their own separate vignette at the same price. If you are towing, you need two vignettes: one for your vehicle and one for the trailer, which you can add during checkout.

Can I buy a Swiss vignette at the border?

Yes - physical stickers are available at Swiss border crossings. However, queues at peak times (ski season, summer holidays) can be significant. Registering an e-vignette online in advance saves time and guarantees you can drive straight in.
